Who said paradise has to be tropical? Plenty of skiers are looking for any excuse they can to hit the slopes and enjoy their slice of paradise this winter.

Crystal Mountain in Benzie County is offering ski lessons to people of all ages and abilities. Their Retired Not Tired program caters to people 50 years and older hoping to learn something new.

Cindy Beard decided to give the program a try last year and she completely fell in love. Now she is shredding the white powder and confident in her skills. “I started a year ago with rental boots, skis, poles and a snowmobile suit-decided that I would give it a try. Through perseverance and listening to these instructors – we find out that there’s so much more you can learn,” explains Beard.

This challenging sport is keeping them young both mentally and physically. Dennis Becker says, “Don’t be old before you’re old and I think you gotta keep that attitude that ‘hey I can do that!'”

Not only is this program is proving that they are capable of whatever they set their minds to but is giving them plenty of new pals. “It’s a great way to get out and socialize and make friends. You don’t have to be the best skier. You can just put the skis on and do whatever caliber skiing you want to do,” says Beard.

Teaching Program: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:15 a.m.

Club Clinic Program: Wednesdays 9:15 a.m.
