Coast Guard Hosts Ice Rescue Training on Munuscong Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard held an ice safety and rescue seminar on Saturday up in Chippewa County.

Several members discussed how to prepare when going out on the ice, what to do if you fall in, and what tools rescue personnel use in an emergency.

They were out on Munuscong Bay, just east of Pickford, where the ice was about a foot thick.

The Coast Guard hosts winter safety seminars every year so people know how to be prepared

“It’s important to know what you need to do if you do find yourself in a situation where you fall through the ice,” said Cody West of Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie. “It is also beneficial for everyone to see the capabilities of the rescue services that are around the area to be able to come and get them.”

The Coast Guard reminds everyone that no ice is 100% safe.

They say it is always important to know what the conditions are before you head out.
