Grand Traverse County Animal Control rescued 21 cats and a rabbit from a dirty apartment this week.

They seized the animals from a Garfield Township apartment.

The apartment’s landlord called in a complaint after noticing a strong smell coming from the unit.

Inside, officers found animal waste, debris and trash all over the floor. The owners are a 21-year-old woman and 25-year-old man from Traverse City.

Now, animal control is recommending charges of abuse and neglect to the prosecutor.

The animals are doing OK and are currently being cared for at the Cherryland Humane Society.

“The vet will be assessing them today and they’re in various conditions. Most are underweight, malnutrition, and have some issues with dealing with the unsanitary conditions that they were exposed to,” said Animal Control officer Jamie Croel.

It’s unclear if, or when, they will be available for adoption.

In the meantime, Cherryland Humane Society is asking for non-clump kitty litter to help care for the cats.
