Talking Trash: Your Old Mattress has Life Beyond Your Home

Thousands upon thousands of mattresses end up landfills every single day across the United States.  What’s even more amazing is that 90% of what mattresses are made of are recyclable. The trick is finding the place to take your old mattress so it can be dismembered, repurposed and stay clear of any landfills.

During ‘Talking Trash’ we met with the owner and creator of Bay Area Recycling for Charities in Traverse City and Kaleva, Andy Gale. Gale walks us through how BARC gladly accepts mattresses on a regular basis and where the parts are then taken to be used in a different capacity.

“People can drop them off Monday through Friday at our facility and we charge about 30-dollars for mattresses to be dropped off to be recycled.  Then they go down to another facility of ours where they tear them apart and then that material gets turned into other items. So as far as it goes, we take these mattresses apart and they get turned into all sorts of different products,” says Gale.
