Lawmakers in Lansing Discuss Solutions to Michigan Jail Overpopulation
Changes could be coming to the way Michigan handles its overpopulated jails while making communities safer.
State leaders gathered in Lansing Tuesday to discuss jail reform.
Lt.-Gov. Garlin Gilchrist and Chief Justice Bridget McCormack began a press conference on the subject.
Over the past year, the Michigan Joint Task Force on Jail and Pretrial Incarceration has met to discuss policy areas affecting Michigan jails.
Tuesday they presented all of their findings to lawmakers.
The task force was trying to figure out ways to reduce incarceration rates while promoting public safety.
