Grand Traverse Man Builds Beds for Kids in Need

During the week, Cody Schaub is a carpenter; but on the weekends, he’s building beds for kids in need.

“We really didn’t think it would go that far,” says Schaub, owner of Schaub Construction and Remodeling.

After seeing a post on Facebook about a child sleeping on the floor, Schaub and a couple of his friends decided to do something about it.

“We’re trying to get back a little but so not just take, take, take, try to be part of the community,” Schaub says.

Whenever they can take a break from their day-to-day jobs, they’re building these frames.

“We did a loft for a little girl, her mattress when we showed up was on the floor, when we got it up, she came in and just started screaming,” Schaub says.

Joseph Crockett-Eickenroth, one of the men helping Schaub, says, “For the parent, looking at your kids and seeing them without a bed, it takes a toll; and being able to provide that for them it helps.”

The group can build three or four beds a day. So far, they’ve built 17.

Crockett-Eickenroth says his favorite part is seeing the joy on the kids’ faces.

“Remembered growing up in a split house hold, my dad didn’t have a bed for me,” Crockett-Eickenroth says.

It’s a job that takes an army, Schaub says.

They have nearly 300 people on the wait list and need all of the help they can get.

“I’m hoping that people kick in, it doesn’t have to be beds it can be anything, just give back a little bit,” Schaub says.

Right now Schaub is need of volunteers and monitory donations for wood and supplies. You can contact Schaub directly at (231) 631-8443 or by email at .
