Northern Michigan in Focus: Beautiful Beaver Island

The massive storm we had last week, the day before New Year’s Eve, caused a lot of problems for a lot of people. But, for some, it created beauty.

And if you’re stuck in the middle of Lake Michigan, you might as well enjoy it.

Corey Adkins explains in this week’s Northern Michigan in Focus.

“I think northern Michigan and Michigan is gorgeous, but when you’re on an island, because it’s a slower pace, people really slow down and enjoy it. They just love to get out in it,” said Paul Cole.

Beaver Island is already picturesque, but the massive storm we had last week turned the island almost into a movie set.

“It was absolutely majestic. The power went off just a couple times yesterday, but when it was on and you could drive through it, especially at dusk, it was almost like you were in Narnia or something,” explained Paul. “You just kind of go through town… Everything was covered, you have these soft lights and the glow. Then you work your way to the point and then back, it was just like a different place. I think snow for every place, but especially here, it just transforms and makes it magical.”

Soon, the streets and driveways would be covered with plows and snow blowers working to undo what Mother Nature just did. But for that day, you could almost think back to the day when the islanders were always on their own, stuck in the middle of Lake Michigan, in one of America’s most remote communities: Beaver Island.

“It’s beautiful, it’s just beautiful, and you really will get away and unwind,” said Paul.
