Multi-Day Upper Peninsula Power Outage Continues, Less Than 5,000 Remain in Dark

Many people in the Upper Peninsula are still this morning after a mix of freezing rain and ice battered parts of Michigan on Monday.

says the multi-day outage is due to ice built up on trees and power lines.

show Chippewa County is down to less than 5,000 customers without power.

In Mackinac County, nearly 800 are still in the dark.

And a little more than 100 outages are being reported in Luce County.

Cloverland says five Michigan-based electric companies have been helping their crews.

They’re working 16-hour days to try and restore power.

With extended power outages in Chippewa County, the American Red Cross is .

It’s located on M-221 south in Brimley.

The Red Cross relief trailer has cots, food, and other essentials.

The township’s fire chief says the shelter is open to anyone who needs a safe, warm place to stay and recharge their phones.

We also have a few school closings in the Upper Peninsula due to those power outages.

Sault Ste. Marie, and Detour Area School Districts are both closed.

Both of those districts do have buildings opening up for the public to shower and use electricity if it’s available.

The Lake Superior Academy, Joseph K. Lumsden Bahweting, and Ojibwe Charter Schools are also closed today.
