A fire gutted a business in downtown St. Ignace on Friday.

A passerby saw smoke coming out of the back of 7th Heaven Salon and Spa around 2:30 Friday afternoon.

That person called 911.

When firefighters got there they saw heavy smoke and flames.

Fire officials say they went to the back of the building but because of the nature of the fire, they shifted to fight it from the front.

The fire chief says the construction of the building made his team uneasy so they had to put special precautions in place.

“We never put firefighters in the building because of the danger of collapse. The structure of the building had bar joists, which once they get heated, they will start to fail and it’s not worth risking a firefighter for that type of event,” said Fire Chief Paquin.

The pavilion building next door has smoke damage.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what started the fire.
