Hook & Hunting: Reporting Poaching

The Department of Natural Resources says this is one of the worst years for elk poaching in Northern Michigan.

They say it is important for anyone to report any suspected poaching.

Here are some of their tips:

  • Never approach anyone you suspect is poaching.
  • Instead, take discreet a picture or video if you can.
  • Take note of any descriptions of vehicles or people.

Most importantly, they say you should contact the DNR.

“Often times these particular cases are solved by tips from the general public, we can’t be everywhere all the time, so we rely on our citizens to keep an eye on our natural resources just as a conservation officer does,” said Sgt. Mark Depew, DNR Law Enforcement Division.

The “Report All Poaching” hotline is 1-800-292-7800. You can also find it on the back of your hunting or fishing license.
