The holidays are often a time of generosity and spreading holiday cheer. For local businesses like Cottage Pottery in Charlevoix it was important to give back in a small way. Paige O’Leary, the owner of Cottage Pottery is making her way to schools around Northern Michigan donating ornaments, hoping the students will have them as special keepsakes for years to come.

One of the schools that took part in the program is St. Mary’s School in Charlevoix. Students of all ages were given the opportunity to express themselves with pottery and paint. “I feel that it’s just such an important part of kids and their development and growth and be able to sit down paint and color,” explains O’Leary.

These kiddos are learning how to channel their inner artist. “You have to really really love your work and love what you do and know that everything won’t be perfect and that you’re going to have to redo some things,” explains 6th grade student, Blaise.

But beyond painting a beautiful ornament, these students are learning the importance of giving back to their community. “I wanted to kids to see that giving back and service is important to teach them at such a young age,” says O’Leary.

The kids are taking notice. They too are hoping to someday be able to pay it forward. Blaise says, “I think that she’s very generous and I’m very appreciative of what she did!”

At the end of the day, these students are walking away proud of their work and proud of the community they come from.
