5th Circuit Court Rules Part of Affordable Care Act is Unconstitutional

In this update, a federal appeals court says part of the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional.

The 5th Circuit Court ruled Wednesday that the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act is invalid.

It follows a similar 2018 ruling in a Texas district court.

Both courts said when the tax on people without insurance was dropped to zero in 2017, it invalidated the individual mandate.

The federal appeals court did not decide how much of the Affordable Care Act, if any, will be impacted by the ruling. But it did send it back to a lower court.
