Sault Ste. Marie Group Hands Out Gift Baskets for Local Veterans

An Eastern U.P. nonprofit is spreading some Christmas cheer to those who fought for our country.

For the second year, the Sault Ste. Marie American Legion Women’s Auxiliary handed out Christmas baskets to local veterans.

They packed 75 gift baskets with goodies and necessities for veterans living at five local assisted living facilities or long term care units.

Nearly 20 volunteers helped with the project and delivered the baskets earlier today just in time for Christmas.

“We do not want them to be forgotten at Christmas time.  Last year we had a veteran tell us that ‘thank you for the basket, I wasn’t forgotten this year,’” said volunteer Maggie Merchberger.

Each unit received a hand-made, patriotic tie blanket, created by foster children, to keep in their lounge area.
