Michigan Legislature Approves of Sports Betting, Online Gambling

Michigan lawmakers voted today to legalize sports betting and internet gambling.

The bills passed after talks with Governor Whitmer.

In exchange for her support, the legislation puts a higher tax on internet gambling than what was first proposed.

Supporters say the bills will protect gamblers.

They say many were already betting through illegal sports books or foreign websites.

Some estimate it could raise up to $14 million a year for Michigan schools.

The governor is expected to sign the bills.

It would make Michigan the 20th state to legalize sports betting and the fifth for online gambling.
