Discovery of Lion Cub Mummies Surprises Archaeologists
For Egyptologists and scientists, it’s always a thrill to discover mummies that have been hidden away for thousands of years.
And this weekend they got a real treat.
They found mummified lion cubs.
Five lion cubs, to be exact. Plus several cats, birds and crocodiles were all found in a large necropolis in Egypt.
They’re on display at the step pyramid south of Cairo.
Archaeologists frequently find mummified cats, but lions are rare.
An official from the country’s Supreme Council of Antiquities called the discovery “the most lovely surprise.”
The government says the mummies come from Egypt’s late period, around 500 BC.
