Boyne City Man Sentenced to Community Service for Attempted Animal Torture

A Boyne City man will have to serve 100 hours of community service at the Charlevoix County Human Society after pleading guilty to attempted torturing of an animal.

Friday morning Travis Nelson was sentenced to pay $1,874 in restitution and serve 100 hours of community service.

Back on October 3, the Charlevoix County prosecutor says Nelson admitted he used a small hair tie band with metal wraps to attempt to castrate a house cat belonging to his girlfriend’s mother. The band was left on the cat for two weeks. According to the prosecutor, Nelson said he had seen the procedure used on farm animals and thought it would save money on neutering.

A family member took the cat to an animal clinic, which then contacted Charlevoix County Animal Control.

The prosecutor says the cat has been in the care of the humane society since February. The $1,874 in restitution will compensate the humane society for caring for the cat.

Nelson will have to undergo an interview at the humane society before being cleared for community service.
