The DNR has launched an investigation into a poaching of an elk in Otsego County.

The DNR says concerned citizens contacted them about the dead bull elk they found on Monday.

The elk was found just south of the Grass Lake and Ford Lake Road intersection in the Pigeon River State Forest.

Conservation officers believe the elk was killed Saturday or Sunday.

Bull elk are a protected animal in Michigan, with a very specific hunting season.

The DNR says this incident is not about hunting.

“This is really not a hunting incident, we feel believe it’s more of a poaching and stealing from the public,” said Lt. Jim Gorno, DNR Law Enforcement Division. “Everybody that enjoys the outdoors should be enraged about a dead animal just being shot and left to waste.”

If you have any information, you are asked to contact the DNR Customer Service Center in Gaylord at 989-732-3541 or call or text the 24-hour at 800-292-7800.
