Crystal Mountain Opens for Season
Friday was also opening day for skiers in northern Michigan.
Crystal Mountain is one of several ski resorts in northern Michigan able to open this weekend.
“We currently have a base of 18-36 inches and that was thanks to a lot of great work by our snowmaking team, they just yesterday finished a 85 hour straight go with making snow and of course mother nature provided us with 12-15 inches of natural snow so it really was a great week,” said Chief Operating Officer John Melcher.
It was welcome news for skiers like Shawn Cole.
“Had deer day off so definitely wanted to be one of the first to get on the mountain. It’s killer, nice conditions, so it’s really nice to be out here early. Just getting in as many runs as I can, get the rust knocked off and have some fun with friends,” said Cole.
The resort says their opening day lining up with the opening of firearm deer season likely means a packed weekend on the slopes.
“So we’ve actually been pretty busy this morning so we’re happy to welcome the folks out and certainly some hunters once they get their deer will hit the slopes hopefully. It’s great to get open this early. We usually try to shoot for around Thanksgiving but we’re thankful that we’re open this early,” said Melcher.
