CMU Students Closely Watching Impeachment Hearings

The House impeachment hearings are historic since only two United States Presidents have been impeached in the past.

These could also shape the trajectory of the political parties going forward. College students are the future of these parties.

“I’m not entirely sure why it’s happening in the first place,” says Gabriel Butzke, president of the Central Michigan University College Republicans.

The same discourse we see in Washington rings true in Mt. Pleasant, where politically minded students are keeping a close eye on the impeachment proceedings. One side says this is foolish and the other says it is necessary.

“I think we’ll know more once the facts are out and kind of less of the political rhetoric,” says Lance Wood, president of the CMU College Democrats, “More of just evidence. This is something that has happened only two other times before. It’s not something we got to experience.”

“You learn about this in your civics class in high school but when you get to actually see the process unfold on a national stage,” says Butzke, “From that perspective it’s fascinating.”

Butzke says the student group expects the president to be impeached.

“If impeachment goes through, which is something we do see happening, we don’t see it going through to removal,” says Butzke.

Without the Senate’s support to remove President Trump, the GOP says this is a waste of time and just a tool to help come election time.

“He’s not going to be able to pass any policy during this, he’s going to have to be solely focused on impeachment. So will most Republicans,” says Butzke, “It’s going to further divide the party so basically the Democrats are throwing a huge wrench into the political process.”

Wood is fine with that.

“They’re bringing these things to light and hopefully people can have more of the facts,” says Wood, “It shows who he is going into 2020.”

He also knows his will open up his party for attacks in the future.

“The next Democrat who is in office, with the current political climate,” says Wood, “I think will face some of these same criticisms.”
