Talking Trash: Recycle-A-Bicycle

9&10 Logo

When it comes to recycling, Michigan is one of the worst in the nation. In fact, Michigan only recycles 15% of all recyclable materials. That’s why the state is pushing the “Know It Before You Throw It” and northern Michigan recycle companies and area businesses want to help with the effort.

Every Tuesday on ‘the four’ we’re featuring a different way to recycle including the rules for that material. We’re also featuring area businesses that are helping to repurpose items that would otherwise end up in landfills. We want to make it simple for your family in an effort to educate and inform. Plus, the mission is to keep northern Michigan and the entire state, clean and green for our environment.

The Recycle-A-Bicycle program in Traverse City was started in 2007.  It’s operated under the Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails. Don Cunkle, an avid bike rider and lover of the bike trails in Traverse City started the program and believed in the mission behind it. For the past 12-years, people have been donating old or broken bikes to the program. Volunteers then refurbish and fix up the bikes to either be sold or donated to those in need.
