Kindergartners Saving for College: Mason County’s Special Piggy Banks

Kindergartners in Mason County are looking toward the future by saving money and investing in college.

The Community Foundation for Mason County wanted to make the future bright for children in their area.

So this year, they started the child savings program.

Students are encouraged to make deposits into their account twice a year and will even receive a $5 bonus each time for doing so.

K2C Coordinator Julie Van Dyke says they are doing this to help more Mason County kids further their education.

“In Mason County we have about 70% of our kids who attend some kind of post-secondary school, but only about 35% of them complete,” she says. “We’re trying to give them the tools to succeed and further their education and gain those careers for a better lifestyle.”

Each kindergartner was also seeded $50 from the John and Anita Wilson Family Fund.
