“Handmade, hand-rolled, hand-filled-flavors and taste. You can’t beat that!”

These decadent dough pillows might just be the best kept secret in Petoskey– Grandma’s Perogies. The owner, Marcie Newton is all about pleasing people’s palletts but she’s also protecting her families recipe– making each perogie by hand.

When people take a bite of one of her perogies, there reactions are priceless. “Oh my goodness it’s heaven,” explains her cousin, Mandy Ide.

Marcie is churning out 60-70 dozen a day but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “When I’m in that kitchen and I’m up to my butt in flour – I’m really in my Zen,” says Marcie.

Family traditions are important especially when they deal with passing down recipes from generation to generation. This is where Marcie got the name “Grandma’s Perogies”, named after her grandmother Julia. “She had a huge heart, she was loving, caring-shared the loves of baking and cooking with our family,” explains Marcie.

The best compliment of all? Marcie says, “When someone tastes them for the first time and they say ‘oh my gosh! These taste just like my grandma used to make’, that’s the best compliment in the world.”

With each pinch she too is proud of her perogies and the progress she’s made. Marcie shares, “I ventured out on my own to try something different. I became my own boss, I struggled the first few years.”

She is currently in 18 stores and an Appetizer at Millie’s on Main on Mackinac Island. If you want more information or would like to try her perogies,

“Each one that I do homemade it’s from me. It’s from my heart, it’s my zen, it’s everything that my story’s about-why I do it.”
