Alpena Habitat for Humanity Re-Store Destroyed by Fire

A portion of Alpena was in the dark Sunday night following a major fire at the Habitat for Humanity Store.

The fire started around 6 a.m. and spread very quickly.

The flames eventually damaging nearby power and fiber optic lines in the city.

Alpena Firefighters battled flames for more than 12 hours.

The city of Alpena says the 100-year-old building was full of highly combustible materials and had lots of crevices where flames could grow.

More than six departments responded to the scene.

The department says two firefighters were injured during the operation and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
