Disabled Big Rapids Student Gets Creative this Halloween

Chase Fuller is like any other 8 year-old. He has been dreaming of Halloween since November 1st, 2018. But this year, Chase had to get creative when it came to the holiday because this past spring he became paralyzed from the waist down. Chase’s mother, Sarah Fuller explains, “My husband and three of our boys were in an accident in April. They went off the road down into a ditch and head on into a tree.”

The Fuller family is grateful that Chase can celebrate the holiday but each day since the tragic accident has given the family new challenges. “A costume for a kid in a wheelchair or other mobility issues doesn’t come easily. We were worried about trick or treating and what that would look like for him getting place to place,” says Sarah Fuller.

But these two wheels aren’t stopping him– just changing things up. Chase went all out this year with the help of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids. “Mary free bed has the Halloween heroes which takes volunteers and donations and creates costumes for children that are in chairs. It just makes you feel so good inside that there are so many people out there giving and volunteering,” explains Kenny Fuller, Chase’s father.

With Halloween Heroes, Chase and other children with disabilities were able to design and take part in the creation of their costumes. Chase wanted to be a DJ, but not just any DJ– he wanted to be DJ Marshmello.

Fitted with turn-tables, and the iconic Marshmello mask, Chase was ready to take on Halloween with confidence.
