Suttons Bay Couple Wins $80 Million Powerball Jackpot

A Leelanau County couple has been announced as the recent Powerball jackpot winners.

Dawn and Phillip Chippewa of Suttons Bay won an $80 million jackpot back on September 21.

This is the fourth Powerball jackpot ticket sold in Michigan and the first in our region.

This ticket was bought at Barrels and Barrels in Suttons Bay.

Wednesday the Chippewas brought their seven children and 21 grandchildren with them to Lansing to receive their life-changing check.

The couple decided to take the lump sum payment and after taxes will receive $42 million.

“The advisor saying ‘your account just got hit,’ but still, even then, like I told him we have to take baby steps, we have to be smart. You know, everyone talks about the lottery curse and we’re not going to let that happen. We have too much value with our family to do something wrong,” said Dawn and Phillip.

The Chippewas say their first major splurge will be a new truck for Phillip and both plan to keep working for the foreseeable future.
