Geologists Say Shoreline Erosion, Bluff Collapses will Continue

WOODTV8 reports from a bit further south down the Lake Michigan shoreline in places like Saint Joseph  and Saugatuck.

Researchers there are studying bluff failures.

A geologist says the failure is a combination of two things: the type of glacial material, and what’s going on top of the bluffs.

Buildings on bluffs can change how water flows into the soil, making the problem worse.

They say homeowners can try holding it back with netting or other systems, but it’s only a Band-Aid.

Experts do not believe the problem will get better.

They recommend leaving native vegetation along the shoreline…

Their longer root system holds the soil together preventing erosion.
