Former Ostego Co. Teacher Faces Charges for Sex Crimes Involving Students

After months of investigating, former Otsego County teacher, Aaron Willand, now faces charges.

Grace Baptist Church use to be a school.

The charges filed this morning involve the former teacher and two of his students.

In December 2018, two victims contacted the Michigan State Police post in Gaylord saying they were victims of a sexual assault of a former teacher at Grace Baptist School in Gaylord.

That launched a long investigation that lasted several months.

On Monday, a judge charged Aaron Willand with several different counts of sex crimes involving two of his former students.

Willand taught at the school from 2001 to 2003.

The incidents allegedly occurred in 2002 and 2003, when the victims were just 12 and 14.

Another former teacher, David Beckner is also accused of sex crimes involving a student.

Beckner’s trial begins March 2020.

State police say they have no reason to believe the school knew of anything before the victims came forward.

“Both women are very pleased with the criminal charges being filed against Aaron Willand. This day has been a long time coming for both survivors and they are confident justice will be served,” said attorney Monica Beck.

Willand will be back in court November 21st.

The church did not want to comment, but the police say they have fully cooperated with the investigation, and are committed to working with authorities to bring these matters to justice.
