Countless animals are euthanized each and every day in animal shelters across the nation. That’s why Little Traverse Bay Humane Society in  Harbor Springs has partnered with the Bissell Pet Foundation to rescue 120 dogs from horrendous conditions at kill shelter in St. Landry’s Parish, Louisiana. The 120 dogs were brought north to Michigan and 20 of them are now with Little Traverse Bay in Harbor Springs.

Executive director for Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, Deter Racine drove down with her staff to St. Landry’s Parish to help vaccinate, microchip and heartworm test 120 dogs. The dogs brought back to northern Michigan are now being cared for and getting ready for adoption. Dogs as young as eight months old were brought back to Harbor Springs, all with compassionate personalities and eager to be adopted into loving homes.

Racine said the living conditions for the animals in the St. Landry’s Parish Animal Control are heartbreaking since there is hardly enough space and most live outdoors in cages and pens. It’s a constant drop off site for animals and resources are limited. She said the drive from Louisiana back to Michgan was ten and a half hours and once the dogs were on their way back to northern Michigan, she said they knew they had been rescued and were safe. Racince said they slept the whole drive back and knew it was ok to relax.

Racine adds, “Adopting one dog, really saves two lives” since it provides more space at Little Traverse Bay for staff to go back to Louisiana and rescue more dogs.
