Kalkaska Eighth Graders Take Initiative to Remodel School’s Memorial Garden

Eighth graders at Kalkaska Middle School have been working every day this week to give the memorial garden outside of their classroom a complete makeover.

Their teacher Bryan Karazia said he pitched the idea to the kids earlier this school year. Since then, they took the initiative themselves to redo the garden. “They have done everything themselves, they’ve fundraisers, they’ve called businesses, they’ve come in on the weekends, on their own time,” said Karazia.

The class broke up into teams, boys verses girls. The winner of course gets pizza party!

Lucas Little on the boys team says “Our first idea was to have a pond, we knew that was going to take a lot of work so we went from a real pond to a dry river bed.”

And on the girl’s side, Alyssa Colvin says team work is important. “You have to count on everyone to like doing their share of stuff and do their part so that you can get it done as a team.”

The community donated over $1,000 worth of gardening supplies to the students.

Little says, “Every day when I come to school, we’ll drive past the gym lobby, and when I see it I’m like that’s where I worked, and I’m really happy.”

The students have until October 17th, to finish the garden. Then, the decision of who wins the pizza is decided!
