Isabella County Prosecutor Discusses Raise the Age Legislation

Raise the age legislation is one step closer to becoming law in Michigan.

If signed into the law, 17 year olds will no longer automatically be charged criminally as adults.

The House and Senate had both passed raise the age, but there were some disagreements about parts of the bills, including funding.

The Isabella County Prosecutor says he feels it’s a good move for the state to make.

“There’s a plethora of research out there that would suggest the young individuals brain is not fully developed to understand some of the consequences of their actions. So from a standpoint of finding someone culpable of a crime, charging them as an adult at 17, I think it makes sense to increase the age to 18,” said Isabella County Prosecutor David Barberi.

Michigan is currently one of just four states that automatically charge 17 year olds as adults in criminal cases.
