Grand Traverse Co. Reaches Settlement With Family of Woman Who Died by Suicide in Jail

Grand Traverse County has reached an agreement with the family of a woman who killed herself in the county jail.

Marilyn Palmer was in jail for 19 days for identity theft charges back in February of 2018.

During those 19 days, the sheriff’s office says she denied thoughts of self-harm 11 times, but was found unresponsive in a jail cell shower and later died.

The county board of commissioners has agreed to settle with her family for $20,000.

More than $3,000 will go to her three children, more than $6,000 to the attorney representing the family, and the rest will go to cover to funeral expenses.

The sheriff’s office says all health, medication and observation protocols for Palmer were followed in the jail.
