Leelanau Co. Discussing Joining Age Friendly Network

Leelanau County has the oldest average population in the state.

Now it could get some extra support.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Michigan will be the fifth state to join the age-friendly network.

The partnership with the AARP and the world health organization aims to provide senior citizens with a better quality of life.

The director for Leelanau County Senior Services tells us county commissioners are considering joining the network.

By doing so they’ll have more opportunities for grants to make improvements in the community

“I think the greatest benefit would be having a community where people of all ages can really thrive. When you make a community that is accessible for older adults you’re making that for community members of all ages,” April Missias, Leelanau County senior services director.

She says individual counties can write letters to the AARP, if they decide to join the network.
