North Lake Correctional Facility Set to Reopen

It has been an on-again-off-again relationship between North Lake Correctional Facility and the community of Baldwin, but Tuesday starts a new and different start.

The facility is set to begin accepting inmates once again.

The facility owner is securing a 10-year contract with the federal government that hopes to bring stability to the prison that they have not seen in a decade.

The North Lake Correctional Facility near Baldwin is set to reopen once again.

The prison has had a tumultuous history here in the area, opening and closing several times in the past decade leaving the people in Baldwin wanting those jobs it creates.

But now the GEO Group has secured a new 10-year contract with the federal government to house inmates at North Lake.

1.800 inmates are expected to be able to fit inside, most of them illegal immigrants facing deportation.

When fully operational, they are expected to employ 300 people, instantly making it one of the larger employers in the county.
