UAW Could Begin Worker Strikes Against GM Next Week

The United Automobile Workers has extended its contracts with two of the three automakers based in Michigan.

The UAW’s contracts with Ford and Fiat-Chrysler were the ones it chose to extend.

The union’s contract with General Motors is set to expire Saturday night.

The UAW has been targeting GM as the first company to negotiate with as they look to reach a compromise on wages, plant closures and other issues.

This deal would then be used as a model for its contract talks with Ford and Fiat-Chrysler.

Experts say a strike against GM plants is likely to happen next week and could involve as many as 49,000 UAW members.

Workers want a larger percentage of the record profits auto-manufactures are reaching.

The three Detroit companies are looking to cut labor costs.
