“Chalk Fairy”: Local Woman Spreads Positivity with Chalk Art

Susan Melton has been spreading positivity for the last nine years across Northern Michigan. Something as simple as a splash of color and a kind message is going a long way. “The world really needs that right now,” says Susan.

Susan is known as the Chalk Fairy here in Northern Michigan. Every single day (Sun, Rain and snow) she leaves a message wherever she may be. “One day I was just like you know what? Maybe if I put this out there where other people can see it too – it will make someone feel better and it will make me feel better,” says Susan.

She hasn’t missed a day. She is on her 3,000th+ day of chalking. “I couldn’t stop. I just kept going and I had no idea 9 years later that I would not have missed a day of chalking,” says Susan. This idea came to her when she was looking for inspiration. She was struggling with depression and anxiety. “I was going through a really really hard time in my life,” says Susan.

Through her struggles she found her purpose – making other people smile and recognize their worth. Susan says, “It makes me want to keep doing what I’m doing. If I know that I’m helping at least one person – that makes all the difference in the world.”

Each time she finishes one of her masterpieces she sees it as a reflection of just how far she’s come. “It makes me happy I didn’t quit. It makes me proud.”

Especially when she thinks of the amount of lives she’s touched through this tiny gesture. “Those little ripples of kindness they keep spreading and that’s what we need,” says Susan.
