“Not only is it good for her-it’s also good for me.”

Being a caregiver is a full time job. A rewarding job that comes with few breaks. That’s why Clare County seniors and caregivers are happy to have Strouse Center Respite Care in Harrison. An adult day program catering to those with dementia.

“It gives the family member the chance to relax– to take a few minutes for themselves” says John Temelko, a caregiver who brings his 96 year-old mom weekly to this program. This is a program bith seniors and caregivers look forward to. It gives them a break and a nursing home alternative. Program Manager, Laura Smith says, “we are that step in between”.

Not only is it a safe space for seniors to come– it’s keeping them sharp with puzzles, games, and forming friendships. “That old saying if you don’t use it you lose it is very very true. People need to remain engaged and need a change of scenery and interact with one another,” says Smith.

Laura Smith is the glue that holds this program together. She loves seniors and it shows. John Temelko says, “She’s doing a job that she loves and cares. She cares for people-she loves the program and loves what’s going on because she knows down the road it’s helping me, my mom or anybody else in this program.”

Each day Laura gives this intimate group activities tailored to their personal interests. “When I make people laugh, when I make people smile, when I help them do something they can’t do themselves – I know that I’m making a difference,” says Smith.

This program is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. Open to any seniors that need assistance or supervision. For more information,
