Senator Stabenow in Northern Michigan to Discuss Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

Michigan U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow was in Northern Michigan Thursday morning to talk about the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

The senator is working to reauthorize and increase funding for the initiative.

Legislation has been introduced in Washington that would reauthorize the GLRI for another five years and increase the funding from $300 million a year to $475 million a year.

The initiative has funded 880 projects in Michigan since 2010.

The senator says it’s critical the initiative is reauthorized and gets a boost in funding.

“At the moment we have it authorized for $300 million, and if we don’t do anything, it becomes just an appropriations fight every single year if we don’t reauthorize it,” said Senator Stabenow. “We need to create additional resources to make sure we’re addressing all of the projects, which we can’t do right now.”
