A Clare County woman and her husband are dead after a 7-hour standoff in Harrison turned out to be a murder-suicide, according to police.

Police were initially called to a home on the east side of Budd Lake shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday for a shooting.

After a long standoff, police were able to get into the home and found Frazer and Nicole Bartel dead inside, police say Frazer killed his wife before killing himself.

A family member was at home and took three children out of the home shortly after the first shooting.

Police locked down the area and closed a nearby stretch of US-127 while they assessed the danger inside the home.

“Once I got on scene, we notified all the neighbors in the neighborhoods in the area what’s going on,” says Clare County Sheriff John Wilson. “We believed we had them contained, so they were aware. A lot of people didn’t know what was going on with all the traffic was going through Harrison but you can’t take that chance.”

Sheriff Wilson says the 2-year-old child was in the room during the shooting.

The children are with family this week.
