Staffing Shortage in Grand Traverse County Jail

Right now there are 143 inmates in the Grand Traverse County Jail but eight of them are staying in the Leelanau County Jail.

While there’s not an overcrowding issue, staffing is a problem.

They have 168 beds but are short six officers.

To operate the jail efficiently, they prefer to keep capacity at no more than 85%, which is where they are now.

This allows them to classify inmates into low, medium and high risk.

“With fewer staff, we’re trying to keep the inmate population low to keep the work load appropriate for the amount of staff that we have at the jail,” said the Grand Traverse County Sheriff Tom Bensley.

The Grand Traverse County Jail will continue to utilize the Leelanau County Jail until they are fully staffed.
