Shovels & Dirt: YouthWorks Sleeping Bear Dunes Project

A group of teens is grabbing shovels, gloves and a positive attitude all to help clear a historic trail that’s part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Leelanau County.

YouthWork is an AmeriCorps program through Child & Family Services of Northwestern Michigan based in Traverse City.

The group is helping teens gain important life and job skills while taking on projects in their community. One of those project sites includes helping to restore and clear the three-mile Kettles Trail in Glen Arbor.

Amanda Elliott, the program manager with YouthWork says it’s a win-win for the teens and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore as they continue working on the trail over the next several weeks.
