Hook & Hunting: Hunting Access Program Expands to Emmet, Charlevoix Counties

Northern Michigan hunters looking to stay close to home this hunting season are in luck!

The DNR is expanding its Hunting Access Program to include Emmet and Charlevoix counties. 

The program allows locals to hunt on private land.

Three private landowners in Emmett and Charlevoix County have opened up their land for hunters this season.

The Charlevoix Conservation District is facilitating the program.

They say the program keeps Michigan hunters local.

“It gives hunters a place to go and stay in Northern Michigan if they don’t want to go far. I’ve had a veteran call me and say, ‘I can’t travel, I can’t go far, I’ve got injuries.’ It’s just a nice opportunity for locals to utilize local spaces. We’ve had a decline in hunting over the past decade or so in the state of Michigan and it’s always been a pretty strong heritage in our state,” said Alison Adams with the Charlevoix Conservation District.

Landowners are paid $17 to $25 per acre.
