Elk Rapids Library Plans Multi-Million Dollar Expansion

A northern Michigan library is turning to its biggest readers for a major expansion.

The Elk Rapids District Library is looking to donors to help raise money for a new addition to the building.

The five million dollar expansion and renovation will double the footprint of the library, including adding a second floor. The library director says they’ll need $3.5 (M) million before they can break ground, but even though fundraising just started in the spring, they’re already halfway there.

Library Director Nannette Miller says libraries all over the country are planning renovations, expansions, or brand new facilities. “Libraries are more important than ever, because of the amount of information that’s available. Also the digital divide, particularly in northern Michigan. A lot of people don’t have internet access at home.”

Miller says the community support has gotten off to a quick start. The goal is to have the renovations and the new addition finished sometime in 2022.
