Gov. Whitmer, GOP Leaders ‘Desperate’ to Avoid Government Shutdown

Governor Gretchen Whitmer says she and Republican leaders are “desperate” to reach a budget deal to avoid a government shutdown.

She also said she could budge as long as there are “good faith” negotiations about spending more to fix the state’s roads.

She met with legislative leaders from the GOP last week and expects their counter-proposal on funding the roads in the next week.

She unveiled a 45 cents per gallon gas tax hike back in March.

That has created an impasse over road funding in Lansing, where the next fiscal year starts on the first of October.
