Chippewa County Sheriff in ICU After Weekend Crash

A Northern Michigan sheriff is recovering in the hospital after a car crash over the weekend.

The Chippewa County undersheriff tells us Sheriff Michael Bitnar is in the ICU with serious injuries.

The undersheriff says it happened just after 7:30 Saturday night on M-28 near Sault Point Road in Chippewa County.

According to the undersheriff, a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction crossed over the center line and hit Sheriff Bitnar’s vehicle head-on.

The undersheriff says Bitnar’s vehicle then rolled over four times.

He says Bitnar was off-duty at the time and Michigan State Police are handling the investigation.

While Bitnar recovers, Undersheriff Greg Postma will be filling in.
