Smokey Bear Kicks Off 75th Birthday Celebrations Near Mackinac Bridge

An icon is celebrating a very special birthday Friday, Smokey Bear turned 75!

To kick off celebrations, Smokey hung out in St. Ignace near the Mackinac Bridge.

Members of the Forest Service, the DNR and the Michigan Inter-agency Wildland Fire Protection Association were there to celebrate the bear.

Smokey was also presented a congressional record honoring his birthday, and all his work to prevent wild fires.

“He’s an icon for fire prevention,” said Chris Peterson, Fire & Aviation Staff Officer, U.S. Forest Service. “It’s a long time but as we see he still looks good after 75 years and I hope it continues and the message of wild land fire prevention continues for another 75.”

Nine out of 10 wildfires are started by humans and as Smokey always says “only you can prevent forest fires!”
