Improvements Coming to Cheboygan County’s Veterans Memorial Park

Veterans are remembering those missing in action by improving the 100-year-old Veterans Memorial Park in Cheboygan County.

On Monday, the Veterans Memorial Park Committee will unveil a new archway at the park.

It’s the first phase of a four year improvement project to honor service members missing in action from Cheboygan County.

It began a year ago when local veterans noticed that the park was in poor condition.

They plan to add new memorials and sidewalks, as well as six tablets for each of the wars and conflicts that claimed the lives of Cheboygan County service members.

The project will cost $80,000 and is funded through donations.

“It’s all about fundraising. We have eight veterans on this committee. None of us are experts on fundraising. But we’ll take any and all help we can get. Everybody helps out, they’ll throw a couple bucks into the donation bucket that we have and everybody’s helping out,” explained Tom Smith, chairman of the Veterans Memorial Park Committee.

The unveiling of the new arch will take place at 9 a.m. Monday.
