Great Lakes Protections: Watch 2020 Democratic Debates on 9&10 News

Five Democratic governors in Great Lakes States want candidates in next year’s presidential election to back a plan to protect freshwater resources.

The plan includes calls to build another shipping lock in the Soo.

That group is being led by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

They proposed a six-point platform Monday.

It suggests an increase in federal spending on drinking water and wastewater system upgrades, fighting invasive species, algae blooms and pollution. As well as building another shipping lock in Sault Sainte Marie.

The governor says she’s also hoping for support from President Donald Trump; and the timing of this plan is no accident.

Tuesday and Wednesday are the second round of Democratic presidential debates, and it’s happening right here in Michigan.

Twenty candidates will face off in downtown Detroit.

Many of those candidates are already in the Motor City hoping to sway voters, who proved in 2016 that Michigan is a battleground state.

9&10 News’ Eric Lloyd will be at the Fox Theatre for both days of the debate, bringing you all the platforms and policy crossfires on 9&10 News and Local 32.
