“This has become our home away from home because of Pat.”

Pat Horan is the Pool Director at the Charles E. Fairman Community Pool in Big Rapids. You can find her here every day of the week from sun-up to sun-down teaching kids how to swim and she is confident no one can do it better… That’s because she has been doing it for 63 years!

“She loves what she does. You can see when she’s with the kids-she has a passion for what she does,” says Big Rapids Mother, Jenni Reger.

This isn’t a job, this is a passion for Pat and has been since she started at just 16 years-old. Giving kids the chance to learn skills they can take with them long after they leave the pool. “Pat definitely gives the kids the confidence-not just with the swimming but that they can do whatever they want to do,” says Jenni Reger.

People like Jennifer Piggott, have been coming here for years. Once as a child learning how to swim and now, bringing her own children here to learn from Pat as well. “She is the kind of person where she will put her whole heart into something and it’s truly amazing,” says Jennifer Piggott.

For Pat, age is truly just a number! As long as she can be in the pool, she is content. “I forget how old I am! Somebody has to remind me, I really don’t care how old I am. It’s what’s in your heart,” says Pat Horan.

Pat is showing that no matter your age, anyone can make a difference and inspire others.
