Sable River Outlet Closed as Crews Continue Searching for Missing Swimmer

The Sable River outlet into Lake Michigan is closed for swimming as crews continue to look for a missing swimmer.

He was last seen at the mouth of the river outlet Thursday afternoon.

Brian Hermman from the Brighton area was last seen about 100 yards south of the first swim buoy.

Brian was in Ludington visiting from Brighton with his wife and kids.

Strong currents took him under Thursday near the Sable River outlet.

Brian and his family were all struggling in the water.

But people nearby the beach were able to rescue his wife and kids.

A Mason County deputy tried getting to Brian but could not.

More than 13 departments including the Coast Guard were searching throughout the night but he has not been found at this point.

After the multiple drownings this week, Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole worked with the Michigan DNR to close off the Sable River outlet until it is safe for swimmers.

The Ludington State Park Lake Michigan beaches is open, but the sheriff’s office reminds everyone to check in on dangerous current advisories.
