Michigan Supreme Court Reviewing Legality of Minimum Wage, Sick Time Laws

Michigan’s Supreme Court is considering the legality of minimum wage and sick time laws.

Republican lawmakers scaled back those laws in September to prevent the measures from going to a statewide ballot.

That meant they could make the laws more business friendly with simple majority votes and a signature from former Governor Rick Snyder.

Justices heard arguments Wednesday.

Michigan’s solicitor general calls the legislature’s strategy, known as “adopt and amend,” unconstitutional and a “slap in the face to the people.”
